Côte de Nuits
Originating in the 19th century, Domaine Robert Groffier is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, currently run by Nicolas Groffier (fourth generation) alongside his father Serge and links to founder Jules and grandfather Robert.
The estate spans nearly 8 hectares in top Côte de Nuits crus: Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares (1 ha) and Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze (~0.5 ha), and Premier Crus in Chambolle-Musigny, Les Amoureuses (1 ha, largest owner), Les Sentiers, and Les Hauts-Doix.
Viticulture is sustainable: manual ploughing since 2005 and no herbicides. Harvests are hand-picked, sorted, and vinified parcel-by-parcel. Winemaking uses indigenous yeasts, variable whole-cluster inclusion (now often ~20%, less than past decades), cold soak, extended maceration, and aging in French oak with proportionate new wood for each cru.
Groffier’s wines are praised for their finesse, balance, and aging potential, highly sought after by collectors. Nicolas has refined a style that melds power with elegance, reducing new oak and enhancing aromatic subtlety. The domaine even holds back half its production for cellaring, releasing only mature vintages for drinking.
